Description of Research

Autoimmune liver disease. The laboratory has developed transgenic mice which develop chronic active hepatitis and cholestatic liver disease after adoptive transfer of autoreactive T cells. The role of organ specific and innate immune cells as well as cytokines in the development and perpetuation of this inflammation is being evaluated.

Host-viral interactions in Hepatitis C infection. This project evaluates the role of genes involved in inflammation by DNA polymorphisms and mRNA gene profiling. We willl assess the effect of the host response in induction of disease and response to therapy including the effect of alcohol and HIV co-infection.
