Seminars & Events

The Immunology program administers numerous activities that promote scientific development and fosters interaction. These events also allow for exposure to recent findings in immunological research. The weekly seminar series invites top researchers in the field to speak at our program. The journal clubs allow for discussion and exposure to current topics in the literature.

Annual Retreat Seminar Series Journal Club Postdoctoral Seminars Program Career Development for Postdoctoral Fellows Happy Hours Student Research Talks

Annual Immunology Retreat
Each year, Immunologists from UCSF and UC Berkeley co-sponsor a two-day conference. This conference allows for scientists from both institutions to share their work and interact with each other in a social setting. Principal investigators or chosen member(s) of the lab give an overview of his/her research-in-progress. A poster session is also held so that others have the opportunity to share their work.

The next retreat will be held at the Asilomar Conference Center in Monterey, California,on Friday, September 21 through September 23, 2012.

Seminar Series
Once a week throughout the academic year, renowned scientists from all over the world present cutting-edge research in the Immunology Seminar Series. The seminars are held at 9am on Mondays inN-225, and are simulcast to Mission Bay. DVD's of most seminars are also available for loan. For details, please contact us at immcord@ucsf.edu or 415/502-1961.

The seminars have been made possible by generous support from the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, the Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis, and the Sandler Center for Basic Research in Asthma.

Journal Club
Each week, a faculty member, a postdoctoral fellow, or a student (under the sponsorship of a faculty member of his/her choice) presents a discussion of one or a few related articles published in research journals in the Immunology Journal Club. The article(s) should deal with research in molecular or cellular immunology, but more general topics in molecular or cell biology, genetics and evolution, and neurobiology are also welcome. Topics too close to one's own research specialty are not encouraged. Beginning in their second year of graduate school, students in the immunology program make an annual presentation in the Immunology Journal Club. In addition to presenting published papers of interest, students also present their thesis research at least once during their training.

This journal club is very well-attended and, together with the graduate course in Molecular and Cellular Immunology, forms the backbone of scientific exchange between faculty, students and postdoctoral fellows.

Postdoctoral Seminars
The postdoctoral fellows comprise a highly independent and interactive group of young scientists. They continually formulate new ideas and develop independent collaborations between laboratories, thus facilitating the cross-fertilization so essential to the success of the Immunology Program.

In addition to actively participating in the Journal Club and the retreat, the postdocs organize a biweekly research-in-progress series in which two postdoc speakers each present their recent work. These seminars provide post-doctoral fellows with an opportunity to present their preliminary data to the immunology community. The Immunology Post-doctoral Fellow Seminars are held twice monthly in HSW-303 and 301. For additional information, contact Maelig Morvan or Gundula Min-Oo.

Program Career Development for Postdoctoral Fellows
The Immunology Program career development pathway targets postdoctoral fellows who have been at UCSF 1 year and beyond. The goal of the program is facilitate the career development of our trainees as they develop their research programs, apply for funding, and apply for faculty positions.

Friday Happy Hours
Once a month, one of the Immunology labs sponsors a "Happy Hour", a themed event that allow program members to interact with each other in a very social setting. Happy Hours are usually scheduled for 5pm on the 3rd Friday. The sponsoring lab provides food and beverages.

Student Research Talks (SRTs)
Once a month througout the year, students are invited to hear upper-level students (typically in their third year) present about their ongoing research projects over dinner. These student research talks (SRTs) allow students to hear about their peers’ work, ask questions, and provide feedback in an informal setting. For more information please contact Tiffany Reese.
