Admissions Requirements
The following courses are prerequisites for admission to the program: general chemistry, zoology or biology, calculus, and biochemistry. Students deficient in some of these prerequisites may make them up either before admission or during the first year of study in the program. Also considered in the admissions process are GRE scores, letters of recommendation and, if possible, personal interviews (some of the leading candidates will be invited to come for an interview). All students who apply must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. A subect test is not required, but we strongly encorage it. For applicants who choose to take the subject test, the choice of subject is up to you, but most applicants typically choose Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry or Physics. Foreign students must take the TOEFL exam and achieve a score of 560 or greater to be considered further. UCSF Immunology students typically have had prior exposure to scientific research through undergraduate thesis projects, laboratory internships, technician positions or summer research programs( e.g. see http://student.ucsf.edu/summerprogram/ for information about the Summer Research Training Program). An account of such exposure is one of the key components of a successful application to the program.
Deadlines
Students apply through the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program. Applications are accepted for admission in the fall quarter only. Applications for Fall 2011 are now being accepted with an application deadline of December 2, 2011.
The application form, all academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation must be received by the deadline date. There is a $70 application fee ($90 for international applicants). Instructions for submitting the fee are included in the online application.
Selected applicants will be invited to one of two interview/recruitment weekends in late January and mid February. Applicants are then notified of their admissions status within a few weeks following the interviews.
Financial Support
Students admitted to the Immunology Program are assured a full stipend, in addition to student fees, and non-resident tuition fees when applicable. To make the available funds go as far as possible, all students who are admitted will be considered for fellowships administered by the Graduate Division on this campus, a major source of support for incoming students. In addition, students are encouraged to apply for support from other sources, such as the National Science Foundation and Ford Foundation predoctoral fellowships. Information on application to these fellowships can be found below. Students are expected to become California residents as soon as possible. Students receive continued support provided they are making satisfactory progress. It is expected that students will complete their graduate work in about five years of full-time study.
Fellowships
Students are strongly encouraged to apply for graduate fellowships from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other sources. Fellowship awards benefit both the program and the students, and often include additional funds for the student's computer expenses, journal subscriptions, and travel to scientific meetings. Eligibility for graduate fellowships depends on a student's background and research interests. Information about the NSF fellowship is provided below:

The application will become available in August. Initial application is due in early November. Application is done online. You may find more information at: https://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/grfp/
Some other fellowships for entering graduate students include:
-National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG)
-Porter Physiology Development Fellowship Program for underrepresented ethnic minority students
